Duels 2013 received a number of upgrades from previous iterations of the series.[3] It launched with manual mana tapping, a deeper stat tracking system, the inclusion of an end step, and a more balanced and cohesive roster of decks. The Duels of the Planeswalkers video games were now meant to be a gateway product for new players to be introduced to Magic. Thus, Duels 2013 and M13 were developed and designed with each other in mind.[4][5][6] Both used the same art, referencing the big bad of the sets: Nicol Bolas.
